Four girls Tibby, Carmen, Lena and Bridget are best friends and have been together since before they were born. This is going to be the first summer they are apart. The year before Carman gets some old jeans from a second hand store and puts them in the back of the closet. This is the first summer she has gotten them out. When they find that all of the girls, who have totally different build, fit into the pants, they decide that the pants are magic and want to pass them between each other over the summer. Lena is going to Greece to see her grandparents; Tibby is the only one staying home and has to go through a summer of working at Wallmans; Carman is going to South Carolina to see her dad; and Bridget is going to Mexico for a soccer camp. The girls made ten rules for the pants. The pants will go from Lena to Tibby to Bridget to Carmen then they will go back to the others in the reverse order. The girls must keep them traveling unless they feel that they need the pants.
When Lena gets to Greece with her sister, she thinks that Greece is beautiful. Lena is upset with her grandmother for trying to hook her up with a boy name Kostos and is mad at Kostos for following her. Lena must tell her grandparents and Kostos the truth. In Greece Lena told her grandmother the real story about Kostos and found out that his parents and baby brother died in a crash when he was young so he came to his grandparents to live and grow up as a Greek boy. On the last day that she would be in Greece Lena went to Kostos and apologized for what happened and they kissed. Lena left her sister to go home and tell her parents where she was and she went to Mexico to help Bridget because she found the letter that had been dropped and lost when she received the pants and read the letter.
. Tibby meet a 12 year old girl with leukemia and she will not stop following her. She also wants to help with a documentary Tibby is making that she is calling a suckumentary. Tibby has agreed to let her. When Tibby gets the pants Bailey wants to wear them and then tape a section for the suckumentary. Tibby finds out that Bailey has been rushed to the hospital because of an infection that she may not be able to overcome because of all of the leukemia treatments. Tibby is upset because her guinea pig Mimi, that she has had since she was little, has died. When she got a call from Bailey she didn’t even answer and she won’t eat.
At soccer camp Bridget has fallen for one of the coaches. Bridget’s coach wants her to back off during scrimmage and bring on her energy during the championships but she doesn’t want to do that. In Mexico Bridget let the other team win the tournament because her coach made her hold in her energy during the other games and then when she didn’t have the energy to give, her coach wanted her to use it so she just let the other team win. She has no energy because of something Eric, the coach she likes, said to her when she was sneaking around at night.
Carmen’s dad surprises her with a woman, who he will be marrying, and her two kids. Carmen is upset and is surprised by the house he was living in and calling his own. She hates it and feels like a guest in her own fathers home. Carmen ran away from her dad and his future family’s home and went back home. The day of her father’s wedding Carmen got the pants from Tibby and went to the wedding. She is not noticed until the wedding was over.
When the girls all got back home they told each other about their summers. Lena told about Kostos and Bridget about Eric. Carmen told about her father and they were careful with Tibby who lost her little friend Bailey towards the end of the summer.
